Remembering America’s prisoners of war and those missing in action

Members from the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency kick off the 24-hour run for Prisoners of War and Missing in Action Week, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii, Sept. 20, 2018. There were seven military service men from Hawaii who were prisoners of war, missing in action, or whose bodies were never recovered. From Sept. 17-21, events will be held throughout JBPHH as part of POW/MIA Recognition Week. The events include readings of the POW/MIA names, a reveille ceremony, beautification of POW/MIA memorial, information tables, sentinel posting, a 24-hour run, and ends on Friday with a POW/MIA Remembrance Ceremony at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu. Observances of National POW/MIA Recognition Day are held across the country on military installations, ships at sea, state capitals, schools and veterans facilities. It is traditionally observed on the third Friday in September each year. (U.S. Air Force photo by Tech. Sgt. Heather Redman)
