Makahiki, "Hawaiian Thanksgiving"

HICKAM AIR FORCE BASE, Hawaii - Braven Canibog, Makahiki protocol officer, announces the arrival of Lono in the native Hawaiian language during the opening ceremonies for the 7th Annual Kapuaikaula (Hickam) Makahiki (Thanksgiving) festival. Local Hawaiian and Hickam officials gathered at Hickam Harbor on Nov. 14 for the Makahiki festival. The festival involved a ceremonial arrival in canoes, spiritual offerings, five skills competitions and a feast to end the day. According to history texts, the Makahiki was started to honor Lono, the Hawaiian guardian of agriculture, rain, health and peace. (DoD photo by U.S. Air Force Tech Sgt. Cohen A. Young)
