HICKAM AIR FORCE BASE, Hawaii - Braven Canibog, Makahiki protocol officer, ushers in Lono at the beginning of the 7th Annual Kapuaikaula (Hickam) Makahiki (Thanksgiving) festival Nov. 14. Local Hawaiian and Hickam officials gathered at Hickam Harbor for the ancient ceremony and festival. The festival involved a ceremonial arrival in canoes, spiritual offerings, five skills competitions and a feast to end the day. According to history texts, the Makahiki was started to honor Lono, the Hawaiian guardian of agriculture, rain, health and peace.
