Makahiki, "Hawaiian Thanksgiving"

HICKAM AFB - Local Hawaiian and Hickam AFB officials gathered at Hickam Harbor, Hickam AFB, Hawaii on Nov. 14 for the 8th Annual Kapuaikaula (Hickam) Makahiki (Thanksgiving) festival. The festival involved a ceremonial arrival in canoes, spiritual offerings, five skills competitions and a feast to end the day. According to history texts, the Makahiki was started to honor Lono, the Hawaiian guardian of agriculture, rain, health and peace.(DoD photo by U.S. Air Force Tech Sgt. Cohen A. Young)
