Makahiki, "Hawaiian Thanksgiving"

HICKAM AIR FORCE BASE, Hawaii - Braven Canibog, Makahiki protocol officer, watches as Kanoa Nelson offers a lei as an offering to Lono during the 7th Annual Kapuaikaula (Hickam) Makahiki (Thanksgiving) festival Nov. 14. Local Hawaiian and Hickam officials gathered at Hickam Harbor for the ancient ceremony and festival. The festival involved a ceremonial arrival in canoes, spiritual offerings, five skills competitions and a feast to end the day. According to history texts, the Makahiki was started to honor Lono, the Hawaiian guardian of agriculture, rain, health and peace. The offerings to Lono during the Makahiki were taken to the burial site. (DoD photo by U.S. Air Force Tech Sgt. Cohen A. Young)
