HICKAM AIR FORCE BASE, Hawaii - Braven Canibog, Makahiki protocol officer, does an oli, or a blessings in the native Hawaiian language at the Haleamau Halealoha burial site on Hickam Nov. 14 following the 7th Annual Kapuaikaula (Hickam) Makahiki (Thanksgiving) festival. Local Hawaiian and Hickam officials gathered at Hickam Harbor on Nov. 14 for the Makahiki festival. The festival involved a ceremonial arrival in canoes, spiritual offerings, five skills competitions and a feast to end the day. According to history texts, the Makahiki was started to honor Lono, the Hawaiian guardian of agriculture, rain, health and peace.
