Hickam honors Heroes at Dec. 7 Ceremony
Gen. Gary North, Pacific Air Forces commander, presents Frank Karas, a Hickam Field survivor of the 1941 attacks on Oahu, with a folded U.S. flag during the 70th Anniversary Remembrance Ceremony at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii, Dec. 7, 2011. Karas was a buck private in 1941, and asleep in bed when the Japanese attacked. Karas’s decision to sleep in instead of going to the chow hall for breakfast the morning of the attacks was a decision he believes saved his life.
