Honoring Heroes

Jessie Higa, volunteer historian and president of the Hickam History Club, places a flag at a headstone Dec. 2, 2012, at the National Cemetery of the Pacific, at Punchbowl in Honolulu, to honor the men who were killed in the Dec. 7, 1941 attacks on Oahu. She directed 10 volunteers to place 92 flags and leis at each of the gravesites of the Hickam Field Army Air Forces Airmen who were killed, including the unknown sites identified as a Hickam Filed casualty. Higa and a team of teenagers from a local school started placing flags last year as a community service project. (U.S. Air Force photo/Staff Sgt. Mike Meares)
