Honoring Heroes
Emma McLeod and Chris Friedrichs places an American flag and handmade lei at the top of a headstone, Dec. 2, 2012, at the National Cemetery of the Pacific, at Punchbowl in Honolulu. McLeod, Friedrichs and eight other volunteers placed 92 flags among the 34,000 gravesites on the grounds of the cemetery to honor the men who lost their lives at Hickam Field on Dec. 7, 1941. The teenagers, with the help of Jessie Higa, started the project to place American flags and leis at the gravesites of the fallen Hickam Field Airmen for a community service project in 2011. They had a lei making party and watched the World War II series, Band of Brothers, while making the leis. (U.S. Air Force photo/Staff Sgt. Mike Meares)
