Honoring Hickam's heroes
Master Sgt. (Ret.) Ken Ford and Col. (Ret.) Andrew Kowalski, both Hickam Field survivors of the Dec. 7, 1941, attacks, awaits the beginning of the ceremony that marks the 71st year since the Japanese attacked the base. The remembrance ceremony hailed and commemorated the actions of the service members and civilians that responded to the attacks, many giving their lives in the line of fire for their country. Hickam Filed lost 189 Airmen and civilians while more than 300 were wounded. Ford, 87, served in WWII, Korea War and Vietnam during his 26-year military career. Kowalski, 98, served in every rank in the Air Force up to colonel, except buck sergeant. (U.S. Air Force photo/Staff Sgt. Mike Meares)
