HO`OMALUHIA BOTANICAL GARDENS, KANEOHE -- Sounds of excitement and laughter were heard as the 17th annual Friends of Hickam Keiki Fishing Tournament began June 2.
More than 100 children armed with bamboo fishing poles and loaves of bread raced to drop their lines into the water. Approximately 150 members from Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam and their children participated in the free fishing tournament hosted by the "Friends of Hickam," an organization seeking to support, promote, and foster strong community relations with military families.
“Events like this allow us to say ‘Thank You.’ This event brings a spark into the lives of the Airmen and their families through a small gesture,” said Mr. James Tam, president of the Friends of Hickam. “It’s so fun for us to come out and see the smiles on all of the kids’ faces and their parents.”
The catch-and-release tournament hosted children ranging from ages 5-12 to catch small mouth bass, catfish, red devilfish and tilapia. The event proved to provide something for everyone whether it was their 30th time or first time fishing.
“It was great,” said Master Sgt. Matthew Taylor, father to seven year old Caroline who it was her first time fishing. “She’s caught around 15 fish and we have had a great time together.”
The event allowed Airmen to relax with their families but also stresses the importance of having great bonds with organizations such as Friends of Hickam.
“The support that the Friends of Hickam provide the 15th Wing is amazing,” said Col. Cavan Craddock, 15th Wing vice commander. “It’s a beautiful location, well organized and we really appreciate them taking the time out to plan this.
Prizes for the most fish caught and biggest fish caught were awarded to boys and girls in two age divisions.
Each child did leave the event with a brand new fishing pole, goody bag and a new fishing story to share with their family.
