Airman and Family Readiness Center hosts seminar for new dads Published Sept. 27, 2007 By Senior Airman Erin Smith 15th Airlift Wing Public Affairs HICKAM AIR FORCE BASE, Hawaii -- Whether brand new to the game or a seasoned vet, Dads are invited to Hickam Airman and Family Readiness center to share advice and learn from each other during a breakfast for dads, tomorrow from 8 to 10 a.m. "The two-hour event is an opportunity for Dads to learn from each other to get good information and really to celebrate," said Cindy Morita, Hickam Family Advocacy Outreach Manager. According to statistics, there is an average of 25 births a month on Hickam, and with each child comes new tests. "Being a new dad and even a seasoned dad has it challenges," said Ms. Morita. "We have some really great resources on base and we make sure that people know about it." Some of these resources include guest speakers available to educate dads. Lt. Governor Aiona will share his personal experience and thoughts on being a dad as will Chet Adessa, Navy Work Life Educator and manager of the Baby Boot Camp, will discuss child safety and care. Though professional speakers and informational packets are useful, sometimes shared experience is the best way to learn. One Dad who is more than willing to share his experiences with the group is Ron Jayne, father of 10-month old twins. "I am looking forward to meeting other new dads and sharing experiences, said Mr. Jayne "I'm certain the program will offer useful information for all attending." Collectively, all the dads have lots of experience to offer and Experiences shared include everything from potty training to finding adequate child care for children of all ages. Along with information and sharing of experience are games and opportunities to win prizes. If the apple didn't fall far from the tree, dads may want to bring their babies--or at least a picture--along for the father-child look-alike contest.
