Hundreds of 3rd grade Hickam Elementary School students can add one more book to their personal libraries this week, thanks to the Rotary Club of Pearl Harbor whose members stopped by the school on Thursday, 23 Oct, to present each 3rd grade student with their personal copy of "A Student's Dictionary".

"The dictionary is not strictly 3rd-grade level but it's written so that 3rd graders can read and comprehend it and use it to lookup up all kinds of information and also helps students develop what they hope will be a life-long interest in reading", said Connie Kraus, Member ship Director for the Pearl Harbor Rotary Club.

Mrs. Kathy Wolford, wife of the 15th Airlift Wing Vice Commander, along with Debra Straight, 15 AW Deputy Inspector General and Jackie Hites from the 15 AW Public Affairs office at Hickam AFB, volunteered to assist the Rotarians in distributing the dictionaries.  According to Kathy Wolford, "the kids really got excited reviewing the dictionary with its useful information on biographies of U.S. Presidents, the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, the Solar System, and information on all the countries. The kids were also intrigued by the five big words and the longest word (containing 1,909 letters) found in the back of the book."

This was part of the Rotarians' annual State-wide project to provide every 3rd grade student with their own dictionary.
