The Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam airshow and open house, originally slated for 24-25 August, is officially cancelled due to the effects of sequestration.

The Office of the Secretary of Defense and the Secretary of the Air Force directed in March that open houses must not incur any cost to the government and that all military flying at installation open houses was prohibited.

"We are very disappointed to have to cancel this opportunity to interact with our local communities," said Col. Johnny Roscoe, 15th Wing commander. "I held off from making the call for as long as possible, but it became abundantly clear that we could not provide both an entertaining and safe environment without incurring costs to the American taxpayer. In the end, we must focus our expenditures on maintaining mission readiness during our new fiscal reality."

The U.S. Air Force Thunderbird aerial demonstration team was scheduled to headline the air show and had previously announced that they would not be attending.
