Makahiki

HICKAM AIR FORCE BASE, Hawaii - Gifts are set aside during the 7th Annual Kapuaikaula (Hickam) Makahiki (Thanksgiving) festival. Local Hawaiian and Hickam officials gathered at Hickam Harbor on Nov. 14 for the Makahiki festival. The festival involved a ceremonial arrival in canoes, spiritual offerings, five skills competitions and a feast to end the day. According to history texts, the Makahiki was started to honor Lono, the Hawaiian guardian of agriculture, rain, health and peace. (U.S. Air Force photo/Senior Airman Gustavo Gonzalez)
