80th anniversary of Hickam Field’s dedication
A lei, made from Hawaiian Ti, Elena and tuberose flowers, and symbolizing affection, endearment and respect, rests on the plaque during a ceremony commemorating the 80th anniversary of Hickam Field’s dedication on Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii, May 29, 2015. On May 21,1935, the war department in Washington D.C. issued General Orders No. 4 designating the Hawaiian flying field as “Hickam Field” in honor of Lt. Col. Horace Meek Hickam. Hickam died the previous year on Nov. 5, 1934 in an aircraft accident at Fort Crockett, Texas. Ground was broken at Hickam Field on May 31, 1935. (U.S. Air Force photo by Tech. Sgt.
