HurEx preps base, island for Cat 4 storm
HONOLULU, Hawaii -- Air Force, Navy, Army, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard military servicemembers, together with state and federal agency representatives, play out an emergency scenario at the Hawaii Convention Center June 4. During the three-day exercise, a Category 4 hurricane "hit" the island of Oahu, affecting joint military forces, local Hawaii residents, and tourists. The U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency, Defense Department members in the Pacific Command, and state and federal government experts all participated, validating the emergency plan which has been in the works for more than two years. Hickam Air Force Base unit control centers practiced the scenario on base as well, ensuring the Air Force is capable of responding quickly, protecting the base population, and supporting the local community.
