The C-17 Globemaster III is the newest, most flexible cargo aircraft to enter the airlift force.  The C-17 is capable of rapid strategic delivery of troops and all types of cargo to main operating bases or directly to forward bases in the deployment area.  The aircraft can perform tactical airlift and airdrop missions and can also transport litters and ambulatory patients during aeromedical evacuations when required.  The inherent flexibility and performance of the C-17 force improve the ability of the total airlift system to fulfill the worldwide air mobility requirements of the United States

On August 19, 2004 Hickam Air Force Base broke ground on the newest home for the Air Force's most modern airlifter.  On February 8, 2006, Team Hickam embraced C-17 No. 1, the "Spirit of Hawai'i - Ke Aloha" with a warm homecoming and welcomed its newest weapon system to the neighborhood.

On July 18, 2006, Team Hickam received its eighth and final C-17 Globemaster III aircraft .  The aircraft was named "Spirit of Kamehameha-Imua" (Imua: moving forward)  in honor of Kamehameha the Great, who unified the Hawaiian Islands in the late 18th and early 19th Centuries.   This marks the successful transformation for the 15th Airlift Wing from a support unit to an operational strategic airlift wing. The maintainers are a composite of active duty and Hawaii Air National Guard.
